Un-rest, 2023

Sit down.

Hold the mug with both hands.

Smell.

Bring yourself to the present.

Sip. Birdcall.

Smell. Sip. Smile.

Feel the warmth of the drink in your palms. Sip. Smile.

Smell. Feel centred. Smell.

Breath.

Sigh.

Smell.

Sip. Smile.

Beautiful tube rose smile.

Sip. Smell. Close your eyes.

I am thinking of my mum whose hot cup of tea or coffee were her moments of solace in a busy day of multitasking. Patients, cooking, childcare everything took a backseat when she sat down on her favourite spot on the sofa with her mug. Just for a second, until something that was more important than her tea called her to attend to it. And everything was more important than that time she treasured for herself.

This is a group of mugs that do not have a flat base on which to rest. It demands the full physical attention of the user. One is compelled to put away all else and indulge for the moment in the act of drinking coffee. Being present, taking your time with the beverage, emptying the mug of it’s contents before moving to other things, is a non negotiable.

The mugs can be delicately cradled in the palms. Each object a reminder of attention and care to yourself.
